A Message from Our Founder
Hear from JD Grant on why he founded IOU and the mission behind everything we do.

The Internet of Us
IOU started in 2016 with a letter to my kids. My son had just been born, and I wanted to put a promise in writing — about the kind of digital world I wanted to build for my family.
Everyone in tech was talking about the "Internet of Things." But the things most impacted by things are us — people. Our families. So I wrote down a simple idea: IOU — the Internet of Us.
With it came a set of promises:
- IOU — Safety
- IOU — Security
- IOU — Privacy
- IOU — Technology
- IOU — Life
- IOU — More
After dealing with my own health challenges, losing my mother, and reflecting on my time in service, those promises became personal. I realized how many families are left scrambling when the unexpected happens — whether it's a deployment, a diagnosis, or just the reality that none of us are promised tomorrow.
That's especially true for the millions of people living with ALS, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, MS, and other conditions that slowly take away your ability to do the things you keep putting off. If that's you or someone you love, IOULegacy gives you a way to get your affairs in order, preserve your story, and protect your family — while you still can.
IOUHome is a private hub where any family can get organized. IOULegacy is a secure vault for preserving what matters most and planning for the future.
At the end of the day, IOU is exactly what it sounds like. I owe you a safer world online.
Our Structure
- IOU, Inc. — A registered 501(c)(3) non-profit that provides free IOULegacy accounts to veterans, first responders, Gold Star families, and those impacted by debilitating conditions
- IOUMore, LLC — The for-profit arm that funds the mission through paid subscriptions
Every paid subscription directly funds a free account for someone who served or someone facing a life-changing diagnosis. That's not a promotion — it's why we exist.
